Recently Google shelved plans for their ambitious solar thermal energy project that offered a cheaper and more environmentally friendly alternative to coal powered energy. The thermal solar energy project is one of many renewable energy projects that the company has infested.
Google has spent $168 million on a giant solar farm that Brightsource Energy Inc. has built in Ivanpah, California. The idea was to direct sunlight onto a tower that reflected the light onto pipes that run past parabolic mirrors which would produce the energy. Opponents of solar energy have used Google’s decision to abandon the project as another failure in a technology that offers the cleanest, most environmentally friendly energy on the planet.
One of the main obstacles to make cleaner-than-coal energy actually came from the solar energy industry itself. Several energy companies have backed off of the solar thermal technology in favor of photovoltaic cells including the Blythe installation mentioned earlier. The chairman of Spanish utility giant Iberdrola recently blasted solar thermal as senseless.

I reside in the southeastern portion of the United States.
